Playing their inaugural match at Centennial Stadium, the Summit rallied under the blazing 90°F sun to defeat the powerhouse Portland Thorns 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in front of a packed crowd of 12,372.

Entering the weekend, the NWSL standings presented a formidable challenge for the expansion side. Denver was looking for a crucial spark to climb into playoff contention, while the visiting Thorns arrived sitting comfortably in third place. Taking down a top-tier opponent like Portland wasn’t just about grabbing three points; it was about proving that Denver belongs among the league’s elite as they continue to build their identity in Colorado.
Heaps’ Heroic Homecoming
The atmosphere was electric well before kickoff with the highly anticipated debut of Colorado native and US Women’s National Team star Lindsey Heaps. Recently returning stateside after a decorated stint with OL Lyonnes, Heaps instantly transformed the midfield against her former club.
Her impact culminated in the 86th minute: with the game deadlocked at 1-1, Heaps threaded a picture-perfect assist to Natalie Means, who buried the game-winning goal, marking her first NWSL goal, and sent the home crowd into an absolute frenzy.
Match Storyline
The afternoon didn’t start easy for the Summit. Portland struck first when former Colorado youth product Sophia Wilson converted a penalty kick in the 25th minute.
However, Denver’s resilience shone through right before the halftime whistle. Deep into first-half stoppage time (45+8′), Janine Sonis found the back of the net to equalize, scoring the Summit’s first-ever goal at Centennial Stadium, shifting the momentum before heading into the locker room.
The second half was a showcase of Denver controlling the tempo. The Summit dominated the ball with 59% possession, generated 38 touches in the opposition box, and outshot the Thorns 18 to 10. That sustained, suffocating pressure finally broke Portland’s defense in the final minutes to complete the comeback.
With the crucial three points secured from this historic home victory, Denver Summit FC climbs to 19 points, putting them within striking distance of the final playoff positions and injecting massive momentum into their inaugural campaign.
