It was a tale of relentless pressure, statistical dominance, and ultimate heartbreak for the visitors at America First Field on Saturday. In a highly anticipated clash on the NWSL Denver 2026 schedule, Denver Summit FC controlled the tempo and dictated play for long stretches, but a clinical second-half penalty saw the Utah Royals escape with a narrow 2-1 victory. With the result, a red-hot Utah side continues their impressive win streak, extending it to nine consecutive matches.

First-Half

From the opening whistle, the Denver Summit FC roster established their identity. Utilizing a fluid 4-3-3 formation, the squad starved the Royals of the ball. The midfield engine – anchored by Delanie Sheehan, Devin Lynch, and Tash Flint – orchestrated a masterclass in possession, controlling a commanding 59% of the ball and forcing Utah deep into their own territory.

Despite Denver’s early territorial advantage, it was the hosts who struck first against the run of play. In the 21st minute, Utah’s Kiana Palacios found the back of the net, putting the Summit on the back foot.

Refusing to let the momentum shift, Denver continued to push forward, racking up 24 touches in the opposition box compared to Utah’s 14. That persistence paid off just before the halftime whistle. In the 45th minute, Sheehan sliced open the Royals’ backline with a brilliant pass, finding Yazmeen Ryan, who calmly slotted it home to make it 1-1.

Second-Half

The second half mirrored the first, with Denver probing the Royals’ defense and outshooting the hosts 9 to 6 over the course of the match. However, the turning point came in the 72nd minute when Utah was awarded a controversial penalty. Mina Tanaka converted the spot-kick, reclaiming a 2-1 lead for the hosts.

Following the goal, head coach Nick Cushing immediately turned to his bench to inject life into the Summit attack. A flurry of late tactical adjustments saw dangerous attacking threat Ally Brazier enter the pitch, alongside veteran defender Carson Pickett to lock down the left flank and push numbers forward.

Denver threw everything into the attack during a frantic final ten minutes, forcing Utah’s backline into desperate clearances. Despite several close sequences and relentless pressure on the Royals’ box, the elusive second equalizer just wouldn’t come before the final whistle.
