Playing just its second road match in the second half, Denver Summit FC took on the San Diego Wave at Snapdragon Stadium tonight. After walking away from their April meeting with a 3-2 loss, the Summit worked a 1-1 finish to earn a point on the road.

In their second franchise meeting, Denver Summit FC took on San Diego Wave FC at Snapdragon Stadium. Denver held the Wave scoreless for the majority of first half matchplay before San Diego’s Melanie Barcenas worked through traffic to put the Wave on the board in the 35th minute. Following the goal, San Diego maintained control of the half, holding 70% possession over the final 15 minutes and holding Denver without a shot from the eighth minute through the remainder of the half.

Denver recovered in the second half, coming back swinging as Yazmeen Ryan found the equalizer in the 58th minute on a perfectly placed header served up on a feed from defender Janine Sonis. The 58th minute equalizer marked the first goal San Diego has conceded at home in the second half of matchplay this season. The Summit regained momentum from there, outshooting the Wave 7-2 in the second half to hold on to a 1-1 draw and earn a valuable point on the road.

In the 10th minute of matchplay, Abby Smith became the 12th keeper in league history to reach 300 saves, spoiling an attempt at the goal from Melanie Barcena. Smith went on to make a total of four saves on the night. Her 303 saves on the season are third-most in the NWSL, putting her just two saves away from moving into the 11th place spot in NWSL history.

Wearing the captain’s band, the Colorado native extended her attacking streak by setting up Yazmeen Ryan’s equalizer. The assist marked Sonis’s fourth of the season and her 12th total goal contribution, surpassing her previous NWSL career high of eight (3 goals, 5 assists) set with Louisville in 2025. She has recorded seven goal contributions across Denver’s past seven matches.

Picking up her fifth goal of the season, Ryan matches her NWSL single-season career high set in 2024 with Gotham FC. The 27-year-old forward has now scored in back-to-back matches for the first time since 2023. After joining Denver Summit FC in a March trade with the Houston Dash, Ryan has anchored the attack while playing all 90 minutes in 12 straight matches.

Denver collects a big point on the road, handing San Diego its first draw at home of the season. Entering tonight, the Wave was 4-0-1 when leading after the first half. Denver’s point gives the club 24 on the season and five through the last four matches.
